Emilio Moro

Bodegas Emilio Moro is one of the oldest leading quality producers in Ribera del Duero. For four generations the Emilio Moro family has carefully farmed their 500 acres of estate vineyards located between 2,400 to 3,000 feet of elevation. The estates legendary Finca Resalso vineyard was planted the year Emilio Moro was born in 1932. The vineyards deep, cool soil is home to some of the winery’s oldest Tempranillo (Tinto Fino) bush vines and is the birthplace of their great single-estate wine Malleolus de Valderramiro. With excellent ripening conditions, these special plots provide tannic wines with a marked acidity and are ideal for ageing.

Estate and Vineyards: The most important asset of the winery is their vineyards, grafted with the purest clone of Tempranillo, which is known in Ribera del Duero as Tinto Fino. This variety produces small grapes and loose bunches necessary to produce robust wines. During the last century in Pesquera de Duero many vineyards were up rooted, but due to the passion of the Moro family for the vines, their vineyards were saved. In this way they have conserved a carefully selected clone which has been grafted in all of their vineyards.

Emilio Moro’s viticultural methods are environmentally friendly, with no artificial irrigation, because they believe this can alter the characteristics of the harvest (the aromatic hints depend on the rainfall) and they prefer that each year has its own personality.

History: The story of Bodegas Emilio Moro goes back four generations. The founder, Emilio Moro, was born in 1891 in Pesquera de Duero, a town in the province of Valladolid which also saw the birth of his son Emilio in 1932. Hard work at the vines built their passion, vintage after vintage on the banks of the River Douro. Emilio Moro instilled all his love for wine in his son, who, in turn, passed it on to the third and fourth generations of the family, consolidating a company which has become a leader of Spanish winemaking.

In 1988, José Moro Espinosa invested the family’s entire savings into winery equipment and Bodegas Emilio Moro was born. The bodega joined the D.O. Ribera del Duero in 1989 and quickly established itself as one of the region’s leading producers of top quality wines. The winery is located at the top of a bend in the Duero River in the town of Pesquera del Duero, just to the Northwest of Peñafiel.

Emilio Moro has not stopped innovating, from the development of indigenous yeasts, digital field notebooks, drones and geolocation in the vineyard, to their flagship sensing project, Sensing4Farming.

"Wine is an art. If you know how to listen, it speaks to you, it lets you know when it needs racking and rest. It’s just like a living creature that we have to understand, tend to and care for." -Don Emilio Moro
