Filibuster Distillery

Artfully Distilled - Carefully Blended - Dual Cask Finished

Filibuster Distillery is a woman and minority owned business with the soul of a small family enterprise. Born in D.C. and now located in Virginia, a true American pioneer. The business began on the corner of 9th, not far from the Capitol, so Filibuster was a natural name choice. They wanted to lampoon the intensity of the political culture in D.C. Maybe if everyone just talked it out over a few drinks, things would go more smoothly?

“Dual Cask” process brings a whole new layer of complexity to the glass.

This unique method combines the long-held tradition of new American oak aging with the avant garde approach of a shorter, secondary aging period in wine-seasoned French oak. Filibuster works with some of the best-known wineries in California, including Ramey, Trefethen, Ladera, and Cobblestone. At the distillery, they utilize the aromatic and flavor profile of Chardonnay, Pinot Noir, and Cabernet Sauvignon to achieve a very unique finish – what they call the “Dual Cask Difference.”

With decades of experience in specialty spirits retail, over the years, the team at Filibuster has tasted and sold almost everything, from super-aged single malt to wet-behind-the-ears American craft. With all that knowledge, starting a business made sense but they knew that building a distillery is hard work and they weren’t interested in selling white whiskey.

The solution? They took inspiration from the traditions of Scotland and the pioneering spirit of the United States and launched a creative finishing and blending program. Guided by the Dilawri Family, they leveraged their longstanding connections to source the very best spirit they could find and then age, blend and give it a new voice by finishing it in one-of-a-kind casks: California wine, sherry, port, you name it.

Their approach will remain nonconventional, using new and old techniques. Not only is Filibuster committed to using local ingredients from Virginia, the promise is to their fellow countrymen, as they work with first time malt and juniper growers and also first-time installers. Their Adage is to grow together.
