James Suckling 92-93pt

A tannic and rich red with medium to full body and blackberry, dark-fruit and sweet-tobacco character. Chewy. Outstanding potential.

by James Suckling, 2019
Wine Enthusiast 92pt

This wine comes from a small estate in the heart of Pauillac. The wine is still developing, its toast and black-pepper aromas coming together and enhancing the bold black-plum fruit flavors.

Vinification

Chateau Bellevue-Cardon is composed of a blend of 80% Cabernet Sauvignon, 20% Merlot. The soils here are deep gravel and clay. The average age of the vines is between 40 & 50 years. After a careful harvest and selection, the grapes are cold soaked for 4-7 days prior to the primary fermentation. Following malolactic fermentation, the wine is aged for 18-24 months in 100% new French oak which is lightly toasted.

Tasting notes

This classic Pauillac is plush and aromatic, with hints of super ripe black cherry and bramble fruit, while the palate is graced with elegant, rolling tannins and a long, fruit expressive finish. 90% Cabernet Sauvignon, 10% Merlot

Description

History of Château Bellevue-Cardon
In 1750, the Pécresse-Perrier family had a chance to buy a few acres in one of the best vineyards in Pauillac, located between the properties of Château Latour and Château Pichon Comtesse de Lalande. Sometimes, you must act fast in business and before these prestigious estates realized it, a little stranger started to challenge them right in the middle of their own vineyards.

265 years later, the last heir of the Pécresse-Perrier family passed away and Château Bellevue was put up for sale. During this time Chris Cardon, a highly regarded Belgian citizen, came to Bordeaux to run the well-known Médoc marathon. He fell in love with the beauty of the region and when he returned to visit the area shortly afterwards, he decided to invest in a Château of his own. The competition for estate had already started between the owners of Château Latour and Château Pichon Comtesse. It is extremely rare for a property surrounded by 1st and 2nd growth classified Château to come to the market. Undeterred, Mr. Chris Cardon, who had made his fortune in pharmaceutical products, bested the offers from the competing Château at the last minute and purchased the estate which he renamed Château Bellevue-Cardon.

The first vintage of the newly formed estate was in 2015. With just 5 acres of vineyards, it contains several special plots of 55+ year old vines. The property only produces around 350 cases a year and for the first time 100 cases will be available for the US market as a Touton exclusive. Decanter magazine has praised the estates wines with previous 96 point ratings. This is a rare opportunity to experience the beauty and exceptional balance of this historic Pauillac terroir.
