James Suckling 96pt

Ripe lemon peel and orange. Some honey and vanilla with loads of new wood. Dense and very sweet on the palate with nice pure fruit and firm tannins from the oak that still needs time to soften. This Sauternes shows a wonderful fruit and excellent potential, but needs time.

Wine Advocate 93pt

Medium lemon-gold colored, the 2010 Guiraud explodes from the glass with baked pineapple, lemon tart and apple pie scents plus suggestions of acacia honey, jasmine tea, musk perfume and marzipan. The palate doesn't disappoint either, exuding bold tropical flavors with a lively line of freshness and a long, perfumed finish.

Wine Enthusiast 93pt

There is a wonderful balance to this wine. It has ripe tropical fruit flavors that are spiced with ginger and lemon zest. At the same time, there is a fine structure with a botrytis core and freshness from pineapple acidity.

Wine Spectator 94pt

A thick, unctuous style, with marzipan, dried pineapple, mango and dried guava notes leading to a good bolt of toasted almond and pie crust on the finish. A muscular, well-stuffed version that will need some time to settle in. Best from 2015 through 2030.

James Suckling 95pt

This is showing a lovely amber color with beautifully complex aromas of pineapple, marmalade, crystallized ginger, honey and dried mangoes. Rich and spicy, with intense sweet spices and tropical fruit balanced by freshness. Very long and youthful still. 65% semillon and 35% sauvignon blanc.

Vinous Media 95pt

The 2010 Guiraud is a little closed on the nose like the 2010 Climens and demands a lot of coaxing from the glass. Eventually it reveals scents of dried honey, fig and ginger but they feel muted at the moment. The palate is much better and more expressive with tangy marmalade and quince notes, good depth and fine tension. It is just a case of waiting for the nose to open because the palate really shows the potential here.

History

Members of the Franconian aristocracy with a long political and agricultural tradition, the Counts von Neipperg family line can be traced back to the 12th century. Representing some eight centuries of winegrowing and winemaking experience, today Count Stephan von Neipperg manages the 9 family-owned estates, 4 of which are in Saint-Emilion, Bordeaux: Château Canon La Gaffelière, La Mondotte, Clos de l’Oratoire, Château Peyreau.

Tasting notes

With a great yield, we have produced a powerful wine, very aromatic, that present a perfect alcohol-sugar-acid balance and an impressive purity of botrytis. The difference with 2009 is the cold temperature we had during august and september. These days and nights cold weather permit to preserve the aromatic precursor and the acidity of the berry. That is why Chateau Guiraud 2010 has a spectacular balance and freshness always reinforce by 35 % of sauvignon. It presents intense aromas, hawthorn flowers, fresh fruit, with a minty note which characterizes the vintage.
The feeling in mouth is magnificent, soft, but robust. The tonic feeling of the botrytis is amplified by a great freshness. Mouth aromas strengthens up the nose: the botrytis now shows them crystallized, of great precision and purity. The aftertaste is long. The sugar power never gives heaviness: It is the magic of natural sugars sublimated by botrytis

Food pairing

Chateau Guiraud can be served with seafood dishes, especially shellfish, lobster, crab and oysters on the half shell. Foie gras is a perfect pairing with its natural sweet, salty and savory characteristics. Chateau Guiraud can also be paired with roasted chicken, veal and pork dishes that are either spicy, or prepared with a touch of sweetness. Spicy Asian cuisine, raw fish, like sushi or sashimi, and cheese, both hard and soft also make great pairings with Chateau Guiraud.

Estate

Château Guiraud, which dates back to the 15th century, is one of the jewels of the Sauternes appellation. Certified organic, the estate has over 100 hectares of vines (65% Sémillon and 35% Sauvignon Blanc). Stephan von Neipperg has been co-owner of the château since 2006. This is fully in keeping with his background, since his family continues to make sweet wine at their estate in Germany.
