Description
Traveling south from Beaune, Meursault is the first of the major white-wine-producing communes of the Cote de Beaune. The lower water table in the village, as compared with Puligny, allows for deeper (therefore cooler) cellars, where producers can mature their wines in barrel longer. Some barrels even see a second winter before being racked and bottled. It is perhaps this combination of factors, the less humid, drier soil contributing to lower yields, and the extended maturation, that develops a richer style with a nuttier character compared to the more floral, stone fruits expressed in the wines of Puligny and Chassagne.
Tasting notes
Full and round, this wine is fruity while smooth and rich. A layer of crisp acidity is surrounded by the generous white and yellow fruits, accented by a touch of toast and spice.
History
Château de Santenay is one of Burgundy’s largest wine domaines. Its prestigious heritage, which comprises a remarkable Château with a glazed tile roof and 90 hectares of vineyards, is the product of a time-old legacy that is closely tied to the history of the Burgundy wine region. This remarkable château, with its varnished tiles, is a spectacular piece of heritage closely tied to the region’s history. Its vineyards are split between the Côte d’Or and Côte Chalonnaise. The diversity of its ‘climats’ results in a rich palette of wines with distinctive styles that reflect the subtleties of the Burgundy varietals.
Vineyard
The municipality of the Côte de Beaune is renowned for its production of great white wines. Chardonnay reigns supreme there. Meursault, although fundamentally dry, gives the palate a mellow impression. It is distinguished by an exquisite nutty taste and a wide range of aromas.
Vinification
Traditional. Moderate pneumatic pressing. Settling of the musts for 12 hours then full fermentation in 228l barrels. Aging on lees.
