Description
In ancient French 'Mazis' meant 'country houses'. This plot in Mazy-Chambertin is made from a very small plot of vines that are 50-60 years old. Mazis-Chambertin (9.10ha) lies at the northern end of the group of Grands Crus, closest to the village of Gevrey-Chambertin, and is divided into two parts of which Mazis-Haut sits on the same rock formation as Clos-de-Bèze, while Mazis-Bas is on slightly deeper soil with some influence from the Combe de Lavaux, both in terms of soil make-up and temperature. It is a predominantly brown soil with a few stones. The underlying rock is in the form of fissured slabs through which the roots are able to penetrate. It is an extraordinary red wine, powerful and complex. A wine just waiting to blossom.
Vinification
After a short cold maceration gives the wines an extra dimension of fruit, they are aged in carefully selected French oak barrels of Allier and Nevers forest wood made by Radoux and Berthomieu, two of the very best coopers. Wines are aged in barrels of varying age and toast and then blended in order to achieve optimum balance and complexity.
Tasting notes
This wine is astonishing pretty with incredible aromatics. Notes of black cherry, blackcurrants and spice pour from the glass and captivate you immediately. On the palate it's powerful and opulent yet elegant and bright with uplifting acidity and voluptuous texture, full of black cherries and plum. Very dense and concentrated in flavor it will age for a long time though it's very approachable now.
