Jeb Dunnuck 91pt

The 2017 Constance comes from a mix of Syrah and Grenache that was completely destemmed and brought up in tank. It’s another beautiful wine from this great winemaker and offers lots of black raspberries, garrigue, dried flowers, and savory earth and mineral aromas and flavors. Medium to full-bodied, textured, and beautifully balanced.

It's hard to believe a Roussillon estate's entry-level wine can be this good. The 2017 Cuvee Constance shows some of Carignan's greenish side, but in this case, it just adds a bit of freshness and lift to the aromas of raspberries while bringing in hints of roses and tea leaves. It's medium to full-bodied with silky but firm tannins that suggest a few years of agreeability, plus plenty of length on the finish.

Description

Visiting Roussillon in 2000, Jean-Luc Thunevin discovered its wonderful terroirs and was seduced by the region. At the same time, he met Jean-Roger Calvet, a local winemaker. They decide to buy a few acres of vineyards together and found the Domaine Thunevin-Calvet, located in Maury on beautiful terroirs of black schists. Their first vintage was produced in 2001. Cuvée Constance is dedicated to Jean-Roger’s daughter.

Vinification

The vineyard consists on vines with an average age of 25+ years. The grapes are hand-picked and then hand sorted at the winery. This wine was very traditionally produced without fining or filtration. It was aged for 16 months in concrete vats.
