James Suckling 91pt

Aromas of dark cherries, leaves, gunpowder and baking spices. It's medium-bodied with crunchy dark cherries and some black pepper on the palate. Transparent and precise with a flavorful finish. From biodynamically grown grapes.

by James Suckling, 2023

Description

The complexity of Bila-Haut reflects the diverse terroirs and wind of the Midi. By meticulously hand-harvesting the best grapes from the best vineyards of the Roussillon, a well-known Rhone producer has transformed his magic to the Languedoc and created a wine with finesse. This wine is fleshy, well-structured with aromas of black cherry and the warm and savage soils of the Roussillon area.

The plots are located on the slopes of the high Agly Valley. They are composed of gneiss and schist from the Devonian Period. Entirely destemmed. The extraction is only performed by punching of the cap. The maceration lasts from 2 to 4 weeks according to daily tastings. The wine was aged in concrete tanks and stainless steel (no oak).

Tasting notes

A muscular red, with concentrated flavors of dark cherry, plum, raspberry tart and grilled fig. The dense finish of dark chocolate is firm and focused, with smoky notes. -Wine Spectator

History

Purchased by Michel Chapoutier in 1999, Bila-Haut is located in the best part of the Languedoc called the CĂ´tes du Roussillon. Historically the site was one of the first areas planted for viticulture by the Greek Mariners and has been continuously a wine region known for making top quality wines. The House of Bila, the translation of the name of the estate, was once a house of refuge for the Knights Templar, which is why their cross is symbolically used on the label. In the hills of the Agly Valley, 40+ year old vines are carefully and meticulously managed by an experienced team of viticulturalists, where sustainable farming and low yields combine to create the highest quality fruit. Wine is made in the vineyards, by paying careful attention to the plants and working alongside nature.
