Jeb Dunnuck 93pt

Lots of ripe black fruits (blackberries, black cherries) emerge from the 2020 Chateauneuf Du Pape Les Hauts De Barville, another complex, medium to full-bodied, wonderfully textured 2020. Herbes de Provence, sweet garrigue, and peppery nuances define the nose, and it's already drinking nicely, yet should evolve for a decade.

James Suckling 91pt

A classic, grenache-dominated Chateauneuf with a wide spectrum of red fruit, as well as notes of spices and violets. Rich, but with plenty of moderately dry tannin to balance the fleshiness, this has a long finish, where the sweetness and savory character are neatly matched. Drink or hold.

Vinous Media 92pt

Checking in at 15% alcohol, the 2020 Chateauneuf-du-Pape Les Hauts de Barville is a shimmering pale ruby. It mixes bright aromas of red and black cherry, raspberry, strawberry, cloves and wood smoke. Full-bodied, concentrated and wrapped in ripe tannins, refreshing acidity balances it before closing with a pleasant finish.

Wine Advocate 92pt

A solid effort by the Brotte team, the 2020 Chateauneuf du Pape Les Hauts de Barville is 76% Grenache, with the balance split between Mourvedre and Syrah. Scents of cherries, suede and dusty earth mark the nose, while the medium to full-bodied palate is a bit taut, but nicely so, with an attractive push-pull between ripeness and acidity, plus silky tannins on the long, expressive finish.

Wine Spectator 92pt

Exuberant and expressive, this offers cherry coulis, raspberry, red licorice and warm earth notes that are juicy and open-knit, yet propped up with snappy acidity, a refreshing surge of fine mineral and a note of tar. Grenache, Syrah and Mourvedre.

Tasting notes

Ripe mulberry and strawberry notes abound from nose to finish, accented by hints of sweet spice and dried Mediterranean herbs. While rich and plush in body, it has brisk, integrated acidity and finely edged tannins that lend elegant structure.

Description

Having a long history of expertise in the appellation of Chateauneuf-du-Pape, the Brotte house knows the terroirs of the area very well. Les Hauts de Barville has distinctive richness, in the typical style of the wines from Domaine Barville. Their vineyards sit on the best exposed terroir of pebbles, limestone and sand of the prestigious cru of Chateauneuf-du-Pape. The strict selection gives this great wine beautiful concentration and a rich symphony of aromatic notes : red fruits (strawberry mainly), spices, truffles and garrigue. The wine is then aged in a blend of 100 year old large oak casks and new small French oak barrels for one year to develop its signature smoothness and richness of aromas and tannins.

Vinification

Sustainable viticulture along with de-budding, de-leafing and green harvest limit the yield and increase the quality of this wine. Hand-picking, de-stemming and gentle crushing are followed by a controlled fermentation at 28 Celsius and a 3 to 4-week maceration. Bottling takes place in November, after a year of ageing and a light filtering.
