Tasting notes
The nose is very expressive and opens itself on liquorice, violette and crushed red fruits (strawberry, raspberry) followed by spicy notes of pepper and juniper. Discreet woody notes bring a beautiful complexity. The mouth is dominated by the suavity of the Grenache that expresses on ripe fruit, figs and plums. The Syrah gives some vivacity and greediness to this great Côtes du Rhône showing silky tannins.
Vinification
Destemming – Complete, partial or no crushing depending on the harvest – The absence of crushing allows the beginning of an enzymatic fermentation during the first days before the grapes burst to strengthen fruity notes. Fermentation beginning at temperatures around 23°c, finishing between 28 and 30°c to maximize extraction. Aged 6 months in oak big casks "foudres" 40 years old, in demi-muids under 5 years and in tronconic vats (110 hl/ 20 years old).
Estate
After more than 160 years, Ogier has grown to become one of the leading producers in the Rhône Valley. Most of its land holdings are in the Southern Rhône area producing wines from Châteauneuf-du-Pape, Gigondas, Vacqueyras and Lirac. The Estate also makes small but exceptional bottlings from parcels within the most notable appellations of the Northern Rhône - Crozes-Hermitage and Côte Rôtie. Ogier’s wines are an ode to finesse, elegance and freshness.
