Estate
After only a handful of vintages Enrico Santini has made a name for himself as one of the most dynamic and respected new producers in Bolgheri. In the midst of Bolgheri's larger estates, Santini is a true “garagiste” in the region, with only 32 acres of vineyards and having transformed his garage and the basement of his home to a winery. A native of Bolgheri, from the village of Castagneto Carducci, Enrico spent 15 years working in the supermarket industry before leaving to work for a friend's winery. After a few years, he ventured out on his own - with no winery, no vineyards, no equipment and, as he puts it, mortgages enough for two lives. Enrico planted his first vineyard in 1998 and was immediately put on the map when the second vintage of his wine Montepergoli won the Tre Bicchieri - a major achievement for a completely unknown winery. Enrico produces limited quantities of two red blends and one white blend made from separately vinified varieties, all grown on his organically farmed vineyards.
Tasting notes
The wine has an intense ruby red color with slightly violet highlights. The bouquet is spicy with notes of cherries, strawberries, raspberries and black currants. Elegant and highly concentrated on the palate with velvety yet persistent tannins.
Vineyard
Enrico vineyards are farmed organically, and are certified as such. Enrico is able to severely limit the use of copper sulphates and sulfur, and strives to produce wines that are as true and pure a reflection of his vineyards as possible.
Vinification
The grapes undergo a prolonged maceration of 3 to 4 weeks, and after fermentation the wine ages for 4 months in new and used French oak.
Wine
Around 2,500 cases are produced of this blend of 4 separate varieties: 30% Sangiovese, 30% Cabernet Sauvignon, 30% Merlot and 10% Syrah.
