In the bottle with the black label, this is a very pretty, relatable and well-priced wine from Tuscany. Made with 100% Sangiovese, the 2020 Chianti Classico Riserva Brolio offers blueberry, plum and sweet spice thanks to 18 months of tonneaux aging. I especially appreciate the wine's pronounced mineral signature that gives the wine a salty or savory side, which is perfect for food pairing.

Ripe and pure, with a jeweled ruby color, the 2020 Chianti Classico Riserva offers a lovely nose of candied raspberry, fresh violets, sweet herbs, and mossy earth. Full-bodied, it offers up a plush texture with ripe meaty fruit, sweet tannins, and a clean finish. Harmonious and ripe, with a refined touch, it's already showing well and will continue to drink well over the coming 10-12 years.

A savory version, this Chianti Classico delivers green olive, tomato leaf, iron and tobacco flavors centered on a core of macerated cherry fruit. Though lean and sinewy, this is also intense and focused, with a lingering aftertaste that feels the pull of both the savory and fruity sides.

Description
This Riserva, produced from a selection of estate-grown grapes, reflects all the soil characteristics of Brolio. Sandstone, marl, marine deposits, and the calcarenites locally called "alberese," all converge in the distinctive harmony of this magnificent wine. The vineyards, that show different exposures, are planted 260 meters to 500 meters (853 to 1,640 feet) above sea level.
Estate
The history of Italy cannot be told without including the prominent contributions of the Ricasoli family, who have produced wine since 1141. Ricasoli is documented as the oldest winery in Italy and the fourth oldest family business in the world. A beautiful illustration of the family tree in 1584 is one of the first images of the Chianti area and the family archives include export receipts dating back to the late 1600s. However, perhaps the most famous historical contribution came from Baron Bettino Ricasoli, who was not only twice the prime minister of Italy, but after 30 years of experimentation and documentation, developed the original formula for the Chianti wine that became the standard for the region.
Tasting notes
Intense ruby red color. Rich and complex nose, which recalls ripe red fruits, spices and sweet notes of vanilla. In the mouth, it is voluminous, with structured, appreciable tannins. Long and persistent finish.
