Wine Advocate 96
This is Mastrojanni's top-shelf wine with the black wax seal affixed to the front of the bottle. The 2019 Brunello di Montalcino Vigna Schiena d'Asino comes from a ridge of vines named in Italian after its shape, which resembles the sturdy backbone silhouette of a donkey or mule. The 2019 vintage delivers robust aromas with black and purple fruits. You also get spice and char from longer cellar aging. It closes with gritty flavors of espresso or Turkish coffee over a generous, full-bodied mouthfeel. Only 5,928 bottles were created.

Black cherries and figs are followed by damp soil with wild fennel breaking through that evolves into a corrected espresso on the nose. The palate is sweet and indulgent with ripe berries, vanilla and chocolate and finally returns to the coffee note with the savory warmth of hazelnut that meets an acidity-charged salinity on the finish.

Estate
Mastrojanni has been writing history with its wines since 1975, collecting awards from all over the world. Today, thanks to an exceptional terroir and men who have believed in it for decades, Mastrojanni has become one of the most respected Montalcino producers. The Mastrojanni winery lies in Castelnuovo dell’Abate, in the south eastern most corner of Montalcino Municipality, in the Province of Siena. An artistic and architectural heritage, surrounded by the majesty of its natural landscapes and, above all, an area particularly suitable for vine cultivation: the homeland of Brunello.
Tasting notes
The intensity and brightness of summer 2015 brought the old vines of Sangiovese to the maximum expression, giving us a wine of great personality, guided by compact and ripe tannins, never astringent, which culminate in a unique finish for elegance and depth. From one of Montalcino’s most celebrated single-vineyards, the Brunello di Montalcino Vigna Schiena d’Asino (“donkey’s back”) comes from a one-hectare hillside crest that runs roughly south to north and enjoys magnificent exposures. This is a seriously elegant and sophisticated effort with gorgeous layering that sees plush fruit pitted carefully next to savory spice and smoke.
