James Suckling 91
Some sweet spices and subtle coffee aromas on top of the rich cherry and blackberry fruit. Structured and chalky, with a medium to full body and a fresh, medium finish. Good fruit with sharp, vibrating tannins. A structured and balanced Ribera del Duero. Tempranillo. From organically grown grapes. Drinkable now, but better in one more year.

Technical Details
Estate
Originally known as the Cooperatia de Pañafiel in the year 1927, the Bodegas Protos winery was the first winery of the Ribera del Duero. This project started with the union of some of the best Spanish winemakers at the time and through their grand efforts and perseverance for each wine vintage, they became one of the best wineries of Spain. The name “Protos” comes from Greek to mean “first.” This name brings back the fact that they were the first winery of Peñafiel, Spain, founding the winemaking of the Ribera.
Tasting notes
Bright cherry color with purple rim. Fresh, where black and red berries blend together with spicy, slight toasted notes and cocoa from the barrel ageing. Very smooth and silky feel, balanced and soft tannins. Pair with roasted lamb, Italian food (pizza, spaguetti bolognese, lasagna), paella, meat stews, semi-aged cheeses.
Vinification
Vineyards certified organic in the Roa de Duero area (Burgos). Manual harvest. Cold skin contact maceration and controlled fermentation at 26ºC in stainless steel vats. Aged 9 months in french barrels.
