James Suckling 93pt

A modern, deep, concentrated Rioja reserva that shows plenty of baked black cherries, blackberries, dark chocolate, tar and dark spices. Full-bodied and structured, with fine-grained tannins and a long, juicy finish. This will age well. Drink or hold.

Wine Spectator 93pt

Fresh and elegant, with concentration and focus to the flavors of black plum reduction, baked mulberry, black licorice and rooibos tea leaf. Offers limber, sculpted tannins, while hints of cocoa powder, mountain herbs and graphite add detail and complexity before lingering on the lightly chalky, spiced finish. Tempranillo and Graciano.

Tasting notes

Ripe cherry red, very intense and bright. A very complex and elegant nose, where aromas of red fruit in liqueur and blackberries stand out alongside patisserie and resinous notes, along with floral aromas including violets. Spiced hints of nutmeg and cinnamon, with some smoked notes. The mineral notes that characterize the soil of the Viña Lanciano Estate are also present. A multitude of textures and flavors burst in the mouth. Very well structured, silky and full-bodied. It leaves a very long and enjoyable finish.

Estate

Founded in 1972, Bodegas LAN lies in the heart of Rioja Alta. The name LAN comes from the initials of the three provinces of the Rioja Designation of Origin: Logroño, Álava and Navarra. María Barua has been the head winemaker and technical director since 2002 and brings both scientific expertise (with an academic background in chemistry in addition to her oenology degree) and local knowledge (having been born and raised in Rioja). Together with her young and energetic team, María focuses on using the latest advances in winemaking to ‘express the virtues of the land’.

Description

The jewel in our crown comes from an exclusive selection of old vines that produce very low yields of superb quality grapes. An exclusive pleasure that is only released in exceptional vintages. LAN's greatest achievement: the wine that represents the culmination of our work. Hand-picked and rigorously sorted from a selection of 40 to 60 year old vines from the single vineyard El Rincón parcel. Located in the southern part of their Viña Lanciano estate in Rioja Alta next to the El Rincón mountain at a 491 meter altitude with gently sloping terrain, North South facing. Produced from traditional Rioja old bush vines.

Vinification

The grapes were hand-harvested in small crates and then selected by bunch and berry on sorting tables so that only grapes in perfect conditions of health and ripeness are allowed to continue to the next phase of vinification.
Alcoholic fermentation takes place in small truncated cone shaped tanks to maximize color extraction. Aged 26 months in new French oak barrels made from very fine-grained oak from the forests of Tronçaise and Jupille. Afterwards, it remained in the bottle for 20 months to refine the aromas and round the palate.
