A smaller production release based on 100% Roussanne, the 2022 Chateauneuf Du Pape Domaine Barville Roussanne has a lively gold hue as well as awesome aromatics of white peach, flower oil, toasted bread, and assorted spicy, honeyed orange-like nuances. Rich, full-bodied, and concentrated, it has a layered, opulent mouthfeel, a terrific sense of freshness, and a great finish. It's a powerful yet seamless, incredibly impressive Roussanne that I would lean toward drinking over the coming 3-4 years or so.

This luxury cuvee from the Brotte family features scents of peach, pineapple, mango and honey. It's full-bodied, plump, rounded and expansive but balanced, with a long, licorice and lime zest-tinged finish. This is ripe, opulent stuff but with sufficient refreshing acidity on the finish.

Vinification

This exclusive cuvee is cultivated from a vineyard area of only 0.65ha (1.6 acres). The fruit is harvested at full maturity and entirely by hand very early in the morning. De-stemming and gentle pneumatic pressing follow. The juice is left to settle, and then ferments two weeks in new French oak barrels in which ageing takes place during 8 months, on lees , and with regular stirring. Blending takes place in March and bottling in the course of April.

Tasting notes

Color: Bright with golden highlights.
Nose: Complex and aromatic with summer stone fruits and dried apricots developing into notes of delicately caramelized buttery hazelnut.
Palate: The front palate is full and rich with intermingling notes of fresh fruits (apple, peach, apricot), vanilla and freshly baked brioche. The finish is elegant and has remarkable length. Excellent ageing potential.

Estate

Domaine Barville is Laurent Brotte’s family estate, in the name of his ancestors, the Barville. The 15ha vineyard is situated on the west side of Châteauneuf-du-Pape and is composed of seven parcels. The vineyards are spread over two of the best areas of the appellation: Clay and pebbles in ‘Pradel’ and shattered limestone in ‘Beaurenard’. The vines have an average age of 35 years and at an elevation of 100m above the Rhône River which, along with the local wind “The Mistral“ creates an exceptionally special microclimate. A very warm climate and the south facing position are ideal for perfect maturation and concentration of the berries.
