Las Moradas de San Martin - Albillo Real 2020
Tasting notes
Pale color, aromas reminiscent of quince jam, pears, honey, white flowers such as orange blossom or jasmine, grapefruit peel and a balsamic finish. A very original white wine for its unctuous, silky palate with a slightly saline finish (due to the minerality provided by the granite) and enhanced by a slight bitterness typical of the variety that makes it very personal, unique, and gastronomic.
Description
As you might guess from the name, Albillo comes originally from the Spanish word for white. The grape is an early-ripening (mid-August), pale-skinned, with small, round berries, delicate flavors, subtle floral aromas, low acidity and high viscosity, yielding full bodied wines.
Estate
LAS MORADAS DE SAN MARTÍN winery began in 1999 on the Madrid side of the Gredos range of hills, recovering the ancient Garnacha vineyards that have been cultivated since the 12th century in the municipality of San Martín de Valdeiglesias. Pago de los Castillejos is where the Madrid region meets the northern part of Toledo and the southern part of Ávila on the edge of the Gredos range. Its climate and special soils make it possible to make wines with plenty of personality and quality. A commitment to the future of people and this land.
“Las Moradas” (known in English as “The Interior Castle”) is the title of the last book Saint Teresa wrote. The name is intended as a nod to literature, as the wine of this area is mentioned by the most important writers of the Spanish Golden Age, and we reflect this on the labels of our bottles.
Vineyard
Mountain plots with organic and biodynamic dry-farmed winegrowing on sandy soils and granitic rocks planted in the 1930’s and 1940’s. Las Moradas de San Martín is inside the SPA 56 (Special Protection Area for birds) a surrounding landscape of great environmental value thanks to its native flora and fauna. These surroundings a natural breathing space, with a very clean atmosphere that we respect and maintain by carrying out preventive treatments only with natural products (organic fertiliser with manure, grape stems, etc.).
Only water is used for cleaning at the winery and it is later reused for watering new plantations. La Moradas is being adapted to obtain certificates for organic and biodynamic agriculture.
Vinification
By plots, some by traditional methods and others by hyper-oxidation allowing for greater representation of the variety in the wine, without interventionism, semi-nightly manual harvest. Direct pressing of whole bunches, the juice is cooled and decanted after 24 hours, and fermentation begins naturally with the grape’s indigenous yeasts. Once fermented, the wine is aged for 8 months in used 500-liter French oak barrels, with batonnages at each full moon. 30% is made without sulphites, providing greater richness, complexity, and a creamier texture. It is cleaned naturally by the cold of winter and racking, without being clarified or filtered. Last battonage in December.
