Jeb Dunnuck 90pt

Bright blue fruits, graphite, and some sweet spice notes emerge from the 2020 Cabernet Sauvignon, a full-bodied, opulent, pleasure bomb of a wine best drunk over the coming 4-6 years.

Tasting Panel 92pt

This small-production gem aged in (75% new) French oak for almost two years. Chewy tannins allow an undercoat of fennel, slate, and spiced black cherry to intermingle with teeth-grabbing plum skin and walnut. Leather-wrapped dark fruits are lifted by black tea and earth on the shadowy finish. Still youthful, with plenty of time to show its best self.

Wine Enthusiast 92pt

Generous aromas of mint, cardamom and ginger light up this full-bodied, moderately tannic wine from the first whiff. Espresso, blackberry, and toasted oak flavors dominate the palate giving a definite spicy character to this wine.

Wine Spectator 92pt

Offers up a ripe burst of mulberry and loganberry fruit flavors that drive through nicely, laced with licorice snap and violet notes along the way. A subtle bramble edge adds energy on the finish.

Description

Patent Wines was formed to create exceptional wines of distinction & excellence from site specific vineyards within an AVA. From lengthy experience and know-how, paired with Bordeaux best practices honed over 45 harvests, they hand produce authentic wines. Patent Wines is the brainchild of two California wine industry veterans, Tom Rinaldi and Eric Risch. Rinaldi was the founding winemaker at Duckhorn, a role he filled from 1978 to 2000 during which he brought the merlot grape and the Duckhorn name to worldwide attention. He went on to establish and nurture such wineries as Pellet Estate, Provenance and Hewitt. Risch is an entrepreneur and marketing genius who turned to winery development and managing with Pellet Estate. Both Tom and Eric were initially going to keep a few of their best quality barrels for personal consumption and to share with friends and family. However, in 2020, both men had plenty of downtime and decided to partner and create very limited production wines focused either on specific vineyard sites or AVA’s. This lead to the creation of Patent wines. Their initial releases have all received high praise as well as ratings. Quantities are limited.

Tasting notes

Well-structured with integrated fruit flavors– think cassis, blackberry, cranberry, mulberry and cherries – with hints of mint, roasted spices, espresso and toasted oak. Moderate tannins with hints of vanilla and licorice. Will only get better with age! 100% Cabernet Sauvignon grapes were aged in (75% new) French Oak barrels for 22 months. A small production of only 550 cases.
